For some reason, the seatbelt always finds its way into fashion at one point or another. It was a “thing” in the 80s and just in this decade, a Norwegian airline had a problem with their seatbelts being stolen because it was such a hot fashion accessory among teenagers. Local clothing brands tried to meet the demand by manufacturing seatbelt belts, but that didn’t stop the stealing. The real airplane seatbelts were still the hot ticket item and having a stolen one gave the wearer more status.

Now in comes Dana Harvey from California. The story goes like this:  Dana Harvey was installing new seatbelts into their 1950s Buick when the idea to make a handbag out of the same material struck him. So he made one for his wife Melanie. Melanie loved it and so did everyone else. The couple decided to make more and the rest is history.

Here’s one of their bags, the Harveys Seatbelt Bag Convertible Tote Treecycle:

Harveys company history reads like an amazing success story, but we imagine there’s a real story behind it all. Melanie, tell us: what kind of handbag did you really want? Did you really want a handbag made out of the exact seatbelts that your car has too? Perhaps you should’ve told Dana what you wanted while he wasn’t busy working on the Buick.

Kidding aside, Harveys has done a great job transforming the lowly seatbelt into an actual usable bag. And they’ve got some really innovative designs:
